LOVE WASN’T THE ANSWER
My favorite scene in Closer is this final break up scene between Natalie Portman and Jude Law. It’s such a well-written scene so I just wanted to incorporate the whole argument into the song and have the music build up as the scene gets more and more heated.
I feel like that scene just shows how unstable relationships can be and that love or the idea of love isn’t the solution to all of its’ problems.
This was actually the last song I recorded for The Ladies.

This is actually the first song I recorded for this mixtape.
The song is based off Penelope Cruz’s character in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Her character, Maria Elena, is a talented but emotionally unstable artist who is in a toxic relationship with Javier Bardem. After meeting Scarlett Johansson’s character, Cristina, Maria Elena believes that Cristina is the missing ingredient in their relationship and they decide start a polyamorous relationship. In the end, Cristina is unhappy and leaves, breaking Maria Elena’s heart which leads to the original relationship to fail.
I believe love shouldn’t really have a limit or restriction put on it. I’m of the belief that “love is cursed by monogamy”. Not that I can’t commit to a relationship (I’ve been in one for going on 4 years), but I’ve never felt comfortable with the idea of having to hide my desires or ask my partner to so for me. Luckily I’m in a relationship where that is not the case.
Anyway, I wanted to write this song about the complexities and complications that can come with such situations.
